“This (library) is not a monolith or a castle. This is a public commons, a public square, that folks are able to make their own and use as their own.” Caitlin Moen, library director of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library system. Dear Library Friends,
As we head into summer in the Mount Washington Valley, the library is buzzing in all the best ways — children discovering new books, neighbors gathering for programs, visitors stopping in for directions or Wi-Fi, new and old friends connecting over shared interests and community organizations finding space to meet, collaborate and grow.
Recently, I read an article in The Christian Science Monitor about how libraries across America are redefining themselves as “community glue” — places that help combat isolation, strengthen civic connection, bridge digital divides and create opportunities for people of all ages to learn and belong. A description that feels especially familiar here at Pope Memorial Library.
Libraries today are about so much more than books, though books remain at the heart of what we do. We are one of the few spaces left where everyone is welcome without needing to buy something, subscribe to something or agree on everything. In a world that often feels rushed, divided and increasingly online, libraries remain wonderfully human places.
This month’s newsletter is a perfect example of the incredible variety of ways our community connects through the library. June’s programs truly offer something for everyone — from an upcoming author visit with Ernest Thompson to a live reptile program with Morphs and Milestones, a textile art swap meet, Sip & Paint brunch, learning to braid wool, beginner mahjong lessons and even a discussion on raw feeding for pets. Whether your interests are literary, creative, educational, practical or just plain fun, there’s a place for you here.
That diversity of programming is intentional. Libraries thrive when they reflect the many interests, experiences and passions of the communities they serve. Sometimes connection happens through a book discussion, sometimes over coffee and painting, sometimes while learning a new skill beside someone you’ve never met before.
As summer visitors return to the Valley, we’re reminded again how fortunate we are to have a library that serves not only as a resource center, but as a welcoming gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Thank you for being part of this community and for helping make the library such a vibrant and meaningful place. |
Read our June newsletter to discover all that is happening this month.
As always, we hope to see you at the library soon and often.
